Dimension 3
Technology
No software application can do it all alone. Therefore, it is important to provide a consistent approach or platform to linke applications, extend them into complementary tools, and enable end-users and business partners to work with project data. Apart from a basic requirement of openness for a totally networked world, the specific nature of the technology is less important than its consistent application.
On a high level, the following are the key technology aspects to consider.
Portal and Collaboration Capabilities Project teams in the 21st century cross organizational boundaries. This requires the ability to share information and collaborate.
Integration of Tools and Applications Organizations need to be able to effectively and efficiently integrate multiple project management applications and complementary tools. This includes internal applications, legacy applications, ERP systems, and external tools.
Reporting and Analytics This includes capabilities of storing project related data in a data warehouse, and providing consistent business analyses and reports, dynamically and interactively.
A more detailed analysis will approach the nature of the technologies used, whether it includes a middleware platform, is easily adaptible. While a service oriented architecture, supportability. What is key is consistency in the approach and/or the platform. Again, 21st Century requirements should combine full integration, standards, and flexibility.
