Backwards (Scheduling) to the Future, or: Let’s Experience South Africa

June 16th, 2009 by bkastel

In 2010, the World’s most visible sports event will take place in South Africa, Africa’s economic powerhouse. It should be needless to say, but this is a major project and program management effort for many parts of the whole country.

Billions will be spent to establish or improve a total of ten stadiums spread across the country, and build roads, and general infrastructure. Besides that, media, communication, and security aspects need to be coordinated, along with ticketing, transportation of visitors and fans, and much more.

And of course, this is the ultimate exercise in backward scheduling: On June 11, 2010, the World Cup will begin!

I only read general information about the status of these endeavors, but it is heartening to see that country on the way proving it can deliver. This week the first new stadium opened its doors, the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. Messi, Kaka, Ronaldo, Klose and Ribery will be ready, and so will be South Africa.

However, when I did some research about the project management related ERP market in South Africa I was surprised. It seemed that the global economic situation hit the country profoundly. The PMI will not have a conference this year, and for a couple of years there had not been a conference of SAP users.
Moreover, some web sites of project management and industry organizations seem to be out of date. The general impression I got was that the dynamics seen in practice is not reflected in the institutions. Maybe that is a good thing, to focus on getting the real job done properly instead of focusing on administrative work and meetings.

However, education and networking is important to get new impressions and ideas. It also can help to be able to sometimes step back and look at things from a distance and from a different perspective. I do therefore hope that we will be able to make a small contributions to give that to project management professionals, during the event we are planning in Johannesburg in September.

The date will be set shortly. And then it means backward scheduling for us…

A few days ago, on May 27, I spoke at a customer event organized by InSynchro, a project management company and Primavera reseller headquartered in Kuala Lumpur. More then 100 people showed up to learn about project management and project management tools.

Participants from a range of companies were [...] Continue Reading…

Project Analytics and the Real World

May 13th, 2009 by bkastel

Yesterday, as many times before, I was sitting at the Peabody in Orlando with some friends, SAP partners and employees. As is appropriate when attending SAPPHIRE, we talked about the ERP market and where it is heading. My concern here often has been that too much focus is put [...] Continue Reading…

A Cinderella That Could Be Queen

April 26th, 2009 by bkastel

Where is SAP in the project management world? In the Middle East, I hear, Oracle seems to rule the day. In maintenance, Maximo seems to be the application to beat. For ENC and major capital projects, Primavera seems to be most solidly established. In the IT world, MS Project [...] Continue Reading…

Doesn’t SAP Already Integrate with Microsoft Project?

April 22nd, 2009 by bkastel

Why would one need to work with external vendors for integrating SAP with Microsoft Project (MSP)? Doesn’t SAP already offer standard tools for that? A quick search shows that SAP indeed has out-of-the-box integration abilities, for example using OpenPS.

There is nothing inherently wrong with OpenPS, and it may make [...] Continue Reading…

Project management is more than PMBOK…

April 20th, 2009 by bkastel

A manager at Shell asked me recently in Kuala Lumpur, “do you have experience with real project management?” Having worked in the project management field for about two decades, I first was surprised by the question. But then I understood what he meant, and his question was a good [...] Continue Reading…

Why Quality Management Is Overrated

April 17th, 2009 by admin

Let me tell you a dirty little secret: When managing projects, I do not really concern myself much with quality. Of course, delivering a quality product as the output of my projects is important to me. I care about quality. But this does not mean that I make quality [...] Continue Reading…

Quo Vadis, Primavera?

April 15th, 2009 by admin

This is the big question. Oracle’s acquisition of this brand name of “best-of-breed” scheduling software is about to change the landscape in the market for enterprise project management tools. Primavera’s founders will soon be out of the picture, and the enterprise project management market will be whittled down to [...] Continue Reading…
